The miracle is to walk on the green earth,

The Summer Day

Who made the world?

Who made the swan, and the black bear?

Who made the grasshopper?

This grasshopper, I mean - the one who has flung herself out of the grass,

the one who is eating sugar out of my hand,

who is moving her jaws back and forth instead of up and down-

who is gazing around with her enormous and complicated eyes.

Now she lifts her pale forearms and thoroughly washes her face.

Now she snaps her wings open, and floats away.

I don't know exactly what a prayer is.

I do know how to pay attention, how to fall down

into the grass, how to kneel down in the grass,

how to be idle and blessed, how to stroll through the fields,

which is what I have been doing all day.

Tell me, what else should I have done?

Doesn't everything die at last, and too soon?

Tell me, what is it you plan to do

with your one wild and precious life?

- Mary Oliver

Dear Reader,

I am writing to send you greetings after a challenging winter as the days are becoming longer and the hint of spring is in the air. The suffering of the people of Japan has been a reminder of the fragility and precious nature of life. So along with an article, I am including two poems. A colleague whom I trained with at UMass Medical School, Dr. Brita Holzel (affiliated with Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School) was interviewed recently in the New York Times as the lead author in a recent study on how mediation may change the brain.

How Meditation May Change the Brain

by Sindya N. Bhanoo

Over the December holidays, my husband went on a 10-day silent meditation retreat. Not my idea of fun, but he came back rejuvenated and energetic.

He said the experience was so transformational that he has committed to meditating for two hours a day, once in the morning and once in the evening, until the end of March. He's running an experiment to determine whether and how meditation actually improves the quality of his life.

I'll admit I'm a skeptic.

But now, scientists say that meditators like my husband may be benefiting from changes in their brains. The researchers report that those who meditated for about 30 minutes a day for eight weeks had measurable changes in gray-matter density in parts of the brain associated with memory, sense of self, empathy and stress. The findings will appear in the Jan. 30 issue of Psychiatry Research: Neuroimaging.

Published research has shown that meditation and relaxation training can be significant and effective adjuncts to the conventional medical treatment of many disorders as well as a powerful means of reducing stress and pain and heightening well-being.  Jon Kabat-Zinn's MBSR Program at the Center for Mindfulness at the UMass Medical School has been on the cutting edge of mind/body and integrative medicine for 28 years.
